LPG plays part in production of cannabis concentrates
Florida-based medical cannabis company Trulieve Cannabis Corp. launched a new line of cannabis concentrates made through a hydrocarbon extraction process using propane and butane. Live Resin, a high-terpene, single-source extract, is the first offering from Trulieve’s new hydrocarbon line. It is created in the company’s hydrocarbon extraction lab using a blend of propane and butane on TruFlower, which has been frozen immediately after harvest. Hydrocarbon extraction uses solvents to gently process cannabis, allowing for the retention of high levels of the plant’s original flavor and terpene and cannabinoid profiles at a lower temperature. Live Resin provides patients with a powerful and richly aromatic experience with a broader sensation of effects, according to the company.

Who Spends the Most Between Recreational and Medical Cannabis Consumers?
Headset, a leading cannabis data, and market intelligence platform, recently conducted an audit of cannabis sales data around the United States—and the discoveries were interesting. As it turns out, it’s the medical cannabis consumers who spend the most money. While this is somewhat surprising considering the lower costs and taxes of medical marijuana, Headset’s September 2021 report on developments in U.S. medical and recreational cannabis markets points to the fact that medical markets are older and more established. There are also likely more medical users than recreational users around the nation, as 36 states have legalized med while only 18 have legalized rec. However, the findings weren’t that simple. The analysis also identified that states saw significant revenue growth following the legalization of adult-use (recreational) cannabis. For example, Illinois saw a 226% increase in recreational purchases between January 2020—when the state legalized rec—and July 2021, while Michigan saw an increase of 1077% in that same period. Data like this makes it seem as if recreational users are spending more, but Headset explains that the data varies drastically from state to state depending on market conditions and legislative history. Looking at the more mature markets, such as those of Colorado and Oregon, one gets a more realistic understanding of the state of the cannabis industry—which offers evidence that recreational legalization for adults is not a death sentence for the medical cannabis market.

Uber Finally Enters Cannabis Space In Canada, Adds Marijuana Orders Via Uber Eats In Ontario
Uber is getting into the cannabis industry in Canada! The delivery and takeout division of Uber has teamed up with the cannabis retailer Tokyo Smoke to provide online weed products orders via Uber Eats in Ontario, Canada, a company spokesperson confirmed Monday, reported Reuters. The rideshare company that already delivers alcohol via its Uber Eats division has been contemplating joining the booming marijuana space for a while. In April, the company’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi revealed that Uber is open to including cannabis deliveries in the U.S. once the plant is legal on the federal level. “When the road is clear for cannabis when federal laws come into play, we’re absolutely going to take a look at it,” Khosrowshahi said at the time. It’s been over three years since Canada legally embraced adult-use cannabis sales in an effort to deal with the illicit and unsafe marijuana market. Nevertheless, the country is still having trouble with illegal producers that are somehow still managing to snag a significant share of total annual sales.

Cannabis Trademark Litigation Leaves Candy Companies With a Bitter Taste
Allegations of candy company trademark violations by cannabis companies are leaving sweets makers bitter. Manufacturers of confections are imploring producers of cannabis edibles to avoid creating labels that may closely mirror popular snack and treat products. One of the major concerns, companies say, is that kids might mistake certain cannabis edibles for well-known and loved snacks like Oreos, Sour Patch Kids or Doritos. Numerous law enforcement agencies and even some state attorneys general had issued warnings prior to Halloween warning of similarities of cannabis products that could closely mirror treats. Concerns about mistakes might be fair where cannabis companies post deceptive packaging on products that contain high levels of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, there were 2,050 kids under the age of 12 who allegedly ingested cannabis edibles at home, compared to about 130 in 2016. There were no reported issues with trick-or-treat (it’s highly unlikely anyone is going to intentionally pass out edible marijuana products to kids, as it’s not only dangerous, but such products can be quite expensive), but there is a legitimate concern for accidental ingestion of products that look like snacks.

Democrats aren’t alone in the cannabis game anymore
Republicans are warming to weed. Nearly half of Republican voters support federally decriminalizing cannabis, and GOP lawmakers are now beginning to reflect their constituents’ view by increasingly supporting broad legalization at the state and federal level. “We need the federal government just to get out of the way,” said Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), who introduced the first Republican bill in Congress to decriminalize marijuana, tax and regulate the industry and expunge certain records this past week. She pointed to more than 70 percent of Americans supporting the idea. Stronger Republican involvement could hasten a snowball effect on Capitol Hill, where Democrats lead the charge on decriminalization but lack results. It could also chip away at Democrats’ ability to use cannabis legalization to excite progressives and younger voters as the midterms approach. “When the culture becomes more accepting of something, even the most resistant groups get tugged along,” said Dan Judy, vice president of North Star Opinion Research, which focuses on Republican politics. “I don’t want to directly conflate marijuana legalization with something like gay marriage, but I think there’s a similar dynamic at play.” Earlier this year, North Dakota’s GOP-dominated House passed a marijuana legalization bill introduced by two Republican lawmakers — the first adult-use legalization bill to pass in a Republican-dominated chamber. And Mace’s bill marks the first time a Republican has proposed federal legislation to decriminalize cannabis, expunge certain cannabis convictions and tax and regulate the industry. As Republicans wade into the weed group chat, they are bringing their principles, constituents and special interest groups. When Mace introduced her bill on a freezing day on the House triangle, she was surrounded at the podium not by Drug Policy Alliance and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, but by veterans groups, medical marijuana parents, cannabis industry lobbyists and Koch-backed Americans For Prosperity.

Marijuana Activists Push Governors To Request Federal Protections For Interstate Commerce
A coalition of marijuana organizations is rallying the business community to join them in asking governors from four key states to seek Justice Department guidance on interstate cannabis commerce. The Alliance for Sensible Markets campaign is currently circulating a sign-on letter for those interested in putting pressure on the governors of California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington to make the request. They want the Justice Department to explain what it would do if two or more legal states entered into an agreement to regulate commerce between them. As it stands, each state’s cannabis market is siloed within its own state borders. That means, for example, that marijuana sold and consumed in Massachusetts is also grown there instead of being grown in, say, California, where it might make more environmental sense to conduct outdoor cultivation. In the letter to governors that the groups will be sending, they said the issue would be largely resolved if marijuana is federally legalized. But “while federal legalization feels inevitable, it could still be years away.” In the interim, the Justice Department should weigh in with enforcement guidance, they said.
