Experts warn that ‘patient influencers’ are being paid by big pharma companies to hawk drugs to US consumers without telling them
As trust in the pharmaceutical companies wanes in the U.S., the firms are turning towards ‘patient influencers’ to use trusted figures in online communities to help hawk drugs to patients, experts warn. A team at the University of Colorado, Boulder, warns in a report published last week that pharmaceutical companies are using internet micro-celebrities to help push drugs to consumers. While Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) drug advertisements are heavily regulated, by using these so-called ‘patient influencers’, the companies can avoid some of the standard disclosures required by law to sell prescription drugs. Experts warn that these ‘patient influencers’ are not major celebrities, but instead smaller figures that may have built a more personal connection with their following. Kim Kardashian was the first influencer to take part in DTC marketing for pharma companies when she posted an Instagram ad for an anti-nausea drug in 2015 Researchers find that Americans use online forums and social media sites when making health care decisions because access and time with doctors can be limited Advertising DTC is a rare practice across the world, but something an average American is strongly familiar with.

North Dakota Activists File New Marijuana Legalization Initiative For 2022 Ballot
North Dakota activists on Monday filed a petition to put marijuana legalization on the state’s November ballot after an earlier attempt to do so legislatively failed last year. New Approach North Dakota’s measure would allow adults 21 and older to purchase and possess up to one ounce of cannabis and grow up to three plants for personal use. Its provisions largely mirror the House-passed legalization bill that was ultimately rejected by the Senate. The coalition backing the new measure includes former law enforcement, a state lawmaker, local advocates and the national Marijuana Policy Project (MPP), which has been behind numerous successful reform initiatives. The petition filed with the secretary of state must now undergo a review with that office, as well as with the attorney general, before being potentially approved for signature gathering. “This is direct democracy in action,” David Owen, a longtime activist in the state and campaign manager for New Approach North Dakota, said in a press release.

Kentucky Governor Explores Executive Action On Medical Marijuana Reform As House-Passed Bill Stalls
A House-passed bill to legalize medical marijuana in Kentucky might be stalled in the Senate in the final days of the legislative session this week, but the governor on Monday reiterated that he’s exploring the possibility of taking executive action to advance reform. Gov. Andy Beshear (D) first signaled last week that he’s interested in what could be done at the administrative level to provide patients with access to medical cannabis, as it’s become increasingly unlikely that the legislature will act by the time lawmakers adjourn on Thursday. “I want to see Kentucky finally legalize medical marijuana,” he said during a press briefing on Monday. “When the people overwhelmingly demand it, the only thing keeping it from happening is we don’t have ballot initiatives, and then the legislature right now won’t follow the will of the people.”Pressed in a follow-up question to elaborate on earlier comments about possible executive actions on the issue, the governor didn’t offer many specifics, saying that while there have been improvements to medical cannabis legislation this session, it hasn’t crossed the finish line and so the administration is going to “look at what legal options are out there” to do something itself.
