Most Ohio Voters Would Support Marijuana Legalization At The Ballot, Poll Finds As Lawmakers Forced To Tackle The Issue

Most Ohio Voters Would Support Marijuana Legalization At The Ballot, Poll Finds As Lawmakers Forced To Tackle The Issue

A key Pennsylvania Senate committee on Monday held the second of three hearings it has scheduled on marijuana legalization, taking testimony meant to help inform a forthcoming reform bill that the panel’s chairman is actively drafting. The Senate Law and Justice Committee meeting focused on the experiences of other states that have enacted legalization, with industry stakeholders, advocates, and representatives of the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity testifying on the issue. Sen. Mike Regan (R), who chairs the panel, circulated a cosponsorship memo last year along with Rep. Amen Brown (D) to build support for the reform, and these meetings are designed to give lawmakers added context into the best approach to legalization for the state. At an initial hearing earlier this month, much of the discussion focused on whether creating a regulated market would be sufficient to eliminate illicit sales, how police would be affected, and the impact on impaired driving. This time around, committee members talked about varying tax structures and other regulatory approaches that have been created in states like Illinois and California.

Tennessee Growers Coalition Continues Push for Delta-8, Hemp Regulation With Upcoming Event

Tennessee Growers Coalition Continues Push for Delta-8, Hemp Regulation With Upcoming Event

In an effort to support Tennessee’s cannabis and hemp industries, the Tennessee Growers Coalition is hosting an all-day advocacy event for its members from 12-1 p.m. March 1 at the Tennessee State Capitol. “Hemp Day on the Hill” will include legislative speakers and updates and allow members to connect and engage with representatives to discuss the “importance of continuing to create an economically viable, accessible, and safe hemp industry,” according to a press release. The event will also consist of several meetings to address top legislative priorities including House Bill 1690, a measure that would tax and regulate cannabis, including delta-8 THC, and Senate Bill 2598, cross-filed with House Bill 1969, which would decriminalize cannabis use under specific circumstances, as well as create a “regulatory framework for the cultivation, transport, researching, processing, and distribution of marijuana,” the bill text states.

Maryland House approves legalization bills

Maryland House approves legalization bills

On Friday, Maryland’s House of Delegates approved two bills designed to legalize recreational marijuana. Under the measures, Maryland voters will decide if marijuana should be legalized, leaving lawmakers to then draft the details for regulating a commercial cannabis industry. “We’re at the beginning of an important process where we begin to look again at how we have treated the substance—cannabis,” Democratic Delegate Luke Clippinger, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee and the sponsor of the legislation, told his colleagues in the House. He made note of the “thousands and thousands and thousands of people we have incarcerated because of it,” adding that “those thousands of incarcerations have not made us any safer.” The legislation approved by lawmakers last week includes House Bill 837, a measure that would legalize possession of up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis for adults and create an equitable path to cannabis legalization, according to Clippinger. The bill would also allow adults to cultivate up to two cannabis plants at home.

West Virginia: House Approves Bill Limiting Medical Marijuana Testing To Just Two Companies

West Virginia: House Approves Bill Limiting Medical Marijuana Testing To Just Two Companies

House Bill 4627, sponsored by Del. Brandon Steele (R), legislation that would limit medical marijuana testing to two companies passed the chamber by a vote of 67-33. The bill would limit medical marijuana testing to just two companies will now be considered by the Senate, reported The Center Square. The bill seeks to amend and reenact state legislation to provide for no more than two licensed laboratories for medical cannabis testing. The proposed amendment establishes that growers and processors shall contract with an independent laboratory to test the medical cannabis they produce. Laboratories will be accountable to the state’s Bureau for Public Health. “The bureau shall ensure that there is sufficient testing capacity to meet patient demand. All laboratories providing testing pursuant to this section shall be certified to do so by the Office of Laboratory Services: Provided, That no more than two laboratories in this state may be certified pursuant to this section,” states the legislation.
