More and more brands are entering the marijuana products marketplace. The growing popularity has ramped up competition for retail shelf space in key adult-use markets such as Colorado and Washington state. According to the 2020 edition of the Marijuana Business Factbook, the growth of retail stores has not kept pace with the upsurge in products. The lack of shelf space has fostered what is called a pay-to-play mentality among marijuana retailers, in which many are now charging brands a fee to occupy shelf space.
