In Anza, California has a popular local reputation with growing marijuana for a very small town with a population of about 3,000 people. Many point to the town’s optimal microclimate for marijuana cultivation as the main source of its popularity. Others give credence to the fact, that the sale of cannabis supplements the income of people who might otherwise live below the poverty line. However, the local government officials have so far shown support for marijuana growers of Anza, with the county Sheriff’s Department conducting frequent raids in recent years. Anza residents are divided on the issue of cannabis cultivation. Recent legislation that has made enforcement less tough and has led to tensions rising as the area becomes more attractive to prospective growers.
