An alliance of civil rights and drug policy reform groups; including the ACLU, Human Rights Watch, Drug Policy Alliance, and NORML is circulating a letter to members of Congress concerning legalization efforts nationwide. The letter implores legislators to sign onto a comprehensive marijuana legalization bill that placing emphasis on restorative justice. The Marijuana Justice Coalition (MJC), the organizations expressed their request is urgent considering the Covid-19 pandemic and national protests about police brutality. They believe that “marijuana reform is a modest first step at chipping away at the war on drugs”.  The letter advocates for the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act from Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler and argues the act will ensure the economic recovery effort is equitable with cannabis taxes and equity programs.
