Reports show Maryland’s medical cannabis market is flourishing, with sales rapidly progressing toward half a billion dollars this year. Cannabis analysts credit that success, in part, to transparent regulations and balanced compliance for patient access. However, there is still a large lingering issue as litigation about within the cannabis industry diversity is still playing out. Regulators opened licensing in 2019 to boost racial and gender diversity, but the effort has been delayed due to litigation and investigations. The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission hired outside consultants to conduct two investigations; determine whether the licensing assessment process was fair and check the accuracy of the information included in the top-ranking applications. Everyone is in a bit of a holding pattern because of the litigation over the licensing of additional cultivators and processors.
