Medical marijuana users in Maine have spent more on cannabis products in 2020 than any year on record, according to Maine’s state sales tax data. Between the start of January and the end of November, sales for medicinal cannabis reached $221.8 million, more than doubling the previous record set in 2019. Overall, the legal cannabis industry has avoided much of the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. States like Massachusetts and Colorado have also seen boosts in sales this year. Industry analysts attribute the surge in sales to the increased time most Americans are spending amid the pandemic at home coupled with expanding access and acceptance of cannabis use. The growth in Maine’s medical sales does not account for the still budding adult recreational market, which posted about $1.4 million in sales in its first month.
