Good news for UK hemp and cannabis today with the unveiling of proposals that could free the industry from the regulatory grip of the crime-focused Home Office and unleash its economic and well-being potential. BusinessCann reported in April how senior advisors to Boris Johnson were suggesting new rules for hemp cultivation and cannabinoid research. And, today the 130-page Final Report by The Taskforce on Innovation, Growth and Regulatory Reform (TIGRR) recommends a significant overhaul of the current system. Report authors ex-Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan-Smith and MPs George Freeman and Theresa Villiers highlight two problems with the existing hemp and cannabinoid licensing rules. And go on to say in a recommendation summary that: ‘Regulation of medical cannabinoids and medicinal CBD should move from the Home Office to the DHSC / MHRA (Department of Health and Social Care and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) to create a regulatory pathway for assessment and approval based on patient benefit.’
