Last Thursday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved hemp regulatory plans for Maryland and the Lower Sioux Indian Community. The USDA has been signing off on hemp proposals on a rolling basis for the past year. In fact, the agency approved plans from Minnesota, Tennessee, and Puerto Rico in July. Last week, two senators representing Oregon directed a letter to the head of USDA, voicing their concern that testing requirements were temporarily lifted will be reinstated in the agency’s final rule. National Association of State Departments of Agriculture and the National Industrial Hemp Council are pushing Congress and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to extend hemp pilot programs for states that haven’t yet been able to finalize regulations under the 2018 Farm Bill.
