Ron DeSantis hints at decriminalizing marijuana in Florida but opposes its recreational use due to its ‘putrid’ stench
Despite suggesting he is in favor of its decriminalization, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis cited the “putrid” scent of cannabis as a reason he may remain opposed to fully legalizing its use in the state, Politico reported. “I think a lot of those other areas that have done it you know have ended up regretting it,” DeSantis said Wednesday during a press conference in Tallahassee, according to Politico. “I could not believe the pungent odor that you would see in some of these places and I don’t want to see that here. I want people to be able to breathe freely.” Democrat Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, who has publicly acknowledged her use of medical marijuana, is running to unseat DeSantis in 2022 and has incorporated marijuana legalization into her platform. Florida voters passed a constitutional amendment in 2016 that legalized the drug’s medicinal use. “You can still go to jail for weed in Florida because Ron DeSantis doesn’t like the way it smells!?!” Fried said in a tweet on Wednesday. “Sounds like Dictator Karen wasn’t having much fun at Yale and Harvard so he’s taking it out on the rest of us.”

Back To Prison For Cannabis Growers? Push To Roll Back Marijuana Legalization In California Is Here.
You could fool yourself into thinking marijuana legalization was like breathing air or wearing socks: one of the few things most Americans could be trusted to agree upon. Since 2012, nearly every major cannabis-related ballot measure put before voters has won handily; in that time, aside from a few outliers like a publicly funded lawsuit challenging voter-approved legalization in South Dakota, politicians have not even bothered to attempt an errand so hopeless as curtailing cannabis’s winning streak. That may finally be changing. Fed up with enormous illegal grows that keep proliferating in his rural Southern California district, state Assemblyman Thurston “Smitty” Smith (R-Apple Valley) introduced a bill last week that, if passed, would roll back part of the state’s voter-approved marijuana legalization law and make growing more than six cannabis plants a felony again. And though this effort as written is almost certain to fail, the idea of sending the cops after cannabis growers again is gaining traction—including with Gov. Gavin Newsom, legalization’s erstwhile poster boy.

FBI and California sheriff illegally seized marijuana cash belonging to licensed dispensaries, lawsuit claims
In the civil suit filed in federal district court, lawyers for Empyreal, a Pennsylvania-based company that transports money on behalf of institutions that include cannabis dispensaries, accuse the FBI and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department of scheming to illegally pull over company vehicles and seize money from its clients. The lawsuit claims that Empyreal vehicles have been stopped by local law enforcement five times between Kansas and California since May 2021, twice resulting in the seizure of cash totaling more than a million dollars, which was then turned over to the FBI. “These repeated, ongoing stops, searches, and seizures are costly to Empyreal and extremely disruptive to its business. Empyreal has been forced to suspend business operations in the largest county in the United States, San Bernardino County, and has stopped driving through Kansas,” the lawsuit says, adding the company has lost customers because of these incidents and hasn’t rolled out new services in multiple states because of similar concerns.

Study Finds That Marijuana Legalization in Europe Doesn’t Increase Underage Usage
Marijuana is the most used illicit substance globally, with roughly 90 million individuals in Europe alone having used the drug once in their lifetime. Recently, scientists from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm conducted a study to determine whether changes in marijuana laws led to an increase in the recreational use of the herb by young adults and adolescents. They found no evidence to support the claim that the legalization of marijuana causes an increase in the use of marijuana in individuals aged 15 to 34. Critics of marijuana legalization often argue that allowing legal and free access to the drug will make it more attractive to young adults and teenagers, which they believe will automatically result in increased usage. The researchers’ objective was to address concerns around social harm that stem from marijuana legalization changes, especially since changes in cannabis legislation in Europe have been initiated in countries such as the Czech Republic, Estonia, the United Kingdom, Italy, Malta, Spain, Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. Prior studies conducted on the impact of changes in marijuana laws on the prevalence of use have yielded inconclusive results.

Congressman Files New Marijuana Banking Reform Amendment To Large-Scale House Bill
The House sponsor of a bill to protect banks that work with state-legal marijuana businesses announced on Friday that he is seeking to attach an amendment containing the reform to a broader bill dealing with research and innovation in the tech and manufacturing sectors. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-CO), sponsor of the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act, has expressed interest in finding another vehicle to pursue his proposal after it was stripped from a separate defense bill late last year. The congressman’s legislation has cleared the House in five forms at this point, only to stall in the Senate. His latest attempt to get the reform enacted is by filing an amendment with the SAFE Banking language to the America COMPETES Act, which does not deal specifically with cannabis issues as drafted but was introduced in the House this week. “Cannabis-related businesses—big and small—and their employees are in desperate need of access to the banking system and access to capital in order to operate in an efficient, safe manner and compete in the growing global cannabis marketplace,” Perlmutter, who is retiring from Congress after this session and committed to passing his bill first, said in a press release.

Schumer Gives Update On Federal Marijuana Legalization And Banking In Meeting With Equity Advocates
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) held a meeting with a variety of marijuana reform and other advocacy groups last week to discuss social equity issues as he prepares to introduce a much-anticipated cannabis legalization bill this year. While activists involved in the Tuesday meeting told Marijuana Moment that Schumer again gave vague details about the timeline for filing the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act (CAOA), saying it will be done “soon,” he did say that he also expects committee hearings to follow after its introduction. Marijuana banking, immigration issues related to cannabis, and the implementation of New York’s adult-use marijuana program were also discussed at the Zoom meeting, which lasted a little under an hour. Schumer characterized the discussion as an “exciting meeting on social equity in federal marijuana reform” in a tweet on Friday. “We’re working to end the prohibition & ensure equity for communities impacted by the War on Drugs—[especially] communities of color.” Representatives of the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA), Cannabis Regulators of Color Coalition (CRCC), Immigrant Defense Project, Women Grow, VOCAL-NY, and Rochester NORML participated. “Sen. Schumer has consistently stood with small and minority-owned businesses. We were glad to share hard-earned lessons for how Congress can ensure that the communities most impacted by the war on drugs are set up for success,” Shaleen Title, who attended as vice-chair of CRCC, told Marijuana Moment.
