US-based Actively Managed Marijuana Fund Launches

US-based Actively Managed Marijuana Fund Launches

Investors gain another entry to marijuana investing thanks to the launch of a new actively managed fund. Foothill Capital Management announced the launch of its new open-end mutual fund, the “Cannabis Growth Fund” (CANNX), on Tuesday (February 26). Eric Banhazl, chairman of Foothill Capital Management, said the firm sees cannabis as still in its infancy stage, but that its potential growth makes it worthwhile to open this fund. The fund will be managed by Korey Bauer, a managing director with the firm. Since 2015 Bauer has been co-managing the All Terrain Opportunity Fund (TERIX). “We believe active management is critical when investing in an industry that has frequent and evolving developments in regulation, applications, and acquisition activity.” The fund from the Arizona-based firm will charge a 0.85 percent fee for management services. According to the prospectus for the new fund, the core investment strategies will hone in eight specific business types: Agriculture technology Ancillary products and services Biotechnology Cannabis products and extracts Consulting services Consumption devices Cultivation and retail Industrial hemp Investors can expect this fund to pursue operations all across the globe where cannabis is legal.

Kentucky governor says medical marijuana executive order likely

Kentucky governor says medical marijuana executive order likely

Gov. Andy Beshear sounded increasingly confident Thursday that he will have the leeway to take “at least some executive action” to make medical marijuana legally accessible in Kentucky. It was the governor’s strongest signal yet that he might singlehandedly allow medical marijuana for Kentuckians suffering from certain medical conditions. His prediction comes as his legal team reviews his options on a long-running issue that stalled in the legislature. The Democratic governor first floated the possibility of executive action about a month ago, and since then the latest bill to legalize medical marijuana died in the Republican-dominated state Senate.”The legal analysis is not yet finalized, but I do think that there is going to be room for at least some executive action,” Beshear said Thursday when asked for an update at his weekly news conference. The governor maintains that legalizing medical cannabis has strong support among Kentuckians.

New York Regulators Approve More Marijuana Cultivators As State Prepares To Launch Retail Sales ‘This Year’

New York Regulators Approve More Marijuana Cultivators As State Prepares To Launch Retail Sales ‘This Year’

New York regulators on Thursday approved a second batch of applications for recreational marijuana cultivators as the state prepares for the launch of retail sales “later this year.” The Cannabis Control Board (CCB) granted an additional 36 cultivator licenses for existing hemp businesses as part of the state’s seeding opportunity initiative. The body approved the first 52 applications last month, and regulators will continue to review the bids on a rolling basis. NEW: The New York State Cannabis Control Board has approved 36 more adult-use cannabis cultivation licenses for farms across the state. NY’s family farmers are growing products to be sold THIS YEAR at retail dispensaries owned by NYers impacted by the criminalization of cannabis. — NYS Office of Cannabis Management (@nys_cannabis) On May 5, 2022, Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) signed a bill from Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes (D) and Sen. Michelle Hinchey (D) to create conditional licenses in February. The intent is to allow existing hemp operators to get a head start on growing marijuana to meet the demand for the forthcoming industry.

New Hampshire House Votes To Give Senate ‘Another Chance’ At Passing Marijuana Legalization

New Hampshire House Votes To Give Senate ‘Another Chance’ At Passing Marijuana Legalization

The New Hampshire House of Representatives isn’t giving up on marijuana legalization just yet, with members taking a new approach to reform after the Senate defeated two cannabis bills last week. While the Senate voted against separate proposals to legalize marijuana home cultivation and create a state-run cannabis market, the House wants to give the chamber “another chance” to enact the policy change. To do that, members adopted an amendment to an unrelated Senate-passed bill to include the non-commercial legalization proposal. Advocates are skeptical that the maneuver will work, but they support the strategy of continuing to put additional pressure on the Senate to hold members accountable. On Wednesday, the House adopted the amendment to attach the text of cannabis bill HB 629 to SB 299, legislation that deals with criminal justice reform that already cleared the Senate. The body then approved the bill as amended on a voice vote. “Frankly, if you’re like me and you’re tired of hearing about cannabis bills, let’s send this one more time and be done with it,” Rep. Terry Roy (R) said on the floor on Wednesday.

Why Are So Many Cannabis Businesses Losing Money Hand Over Fist?

Why Are So Many Cannabis Businesses Losing Money Hand Over Fist?

Despite all the hardships that come with being in the cannabis business, it hasn’t stopped many from starting their own with the hopes that one day soon, cannabis will finally be federally legal. This article originally appeared on Cannabis.net and has been reposted with permission. According to New Frontier Data, the United States cannabis industry is poised to be worth a staggering $30 billion each year by 2025. Cannabis legalization continues to spread across new states, while members of Congress continue to push for reform. Federal legalization is still being debated, but once it finally breaks through, the cannabis industry can reach even higher heights unlike ever before. In addition, data from Vangst shows that the legal cannabis industry employs over 420,000 people as of January 2022. They add that 280 new jobs a day, on average, were added in 2021. With these statistics, why is it that many cannabis businesses struggle to see profits? A recent survey conducted by the National Cannabis Industry Association polled 396 cannabis business operators from 20 states, with a goal to “establish a baseline of data, and identify the successes and the challenges that operators in the industry are facing.”

New York Cannabis Regulators Approve 36 New Grow Licenses

New York Cannabis Regulators Approve 36 New Grow Licenses

The list of hemp farmers approved to cash in on New York’s forthcoming adult-use cannabis market grew by 36 on April 5. The state’s Cannabis Control Board (CCB) members voted in favor of issuing the conditional adult-use cannabis cultivation licenses for the list of three dozen farmers during a short meeting Thursday, bringing the total number of approved licensees to 88. The board members approved 52 hemp farmers during their regular meeting on April 14.  Those approvals come as the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) works to process nearly 200 applications in total to submit to the CCB for consideration as the 2022 growing season arrives. At last month’s meeting, OCM Director Chris Alexander said, “We’re going to continue to process applications on a rolling basis and working to get them to the board for approval as quickly as possible.” The resolutions to approve the issuance of those first two batches of licenses come on the heels of Gov. Kathy Hochul signing legislation in late February to allow hemp businesses to grow cannabis to help jumpstart the adult-use market and ensure there’s adequate supply when commercial sales possibly launch later this year.
